What lamps will work best in a low interior?

High, spacious interiors with full electrical installations are a grateful subject for designers and homebuilders alike - and that goes for finishes, furniture and lighting. But what if you have an interior with a relatively low ceiling or a room where there is no connection to ceiling lighting? How to light a low interior or an interior without central lighting and make it look its best? We have some suggestions for you.

In an interior with a relatively low ceiling will work best three types of overhead lighting:

As far as ceiling lamps will look great in a small living room or in a bedroom where most of the space is occupied by a bed, these ceiling spotlights will work well as overhead lighting for a large living room as well as a kitchen. In low-ceilinged rooms, the following will work particularly well surface-mounted lamps in the form of white tubes, arranged in a larger group and at equal intervals, which will merge with the ceiling (as with the minimalist ceiling spotlights from the Barlo collection).

If you are dealing with a low interior, it is also worth using interior tricks that will help you visually "raise the ceiling":

  • paint the ceiling white, preferably with a glossy paint that reflects light
  • choose white or bright, and above all, flat ceiling lamps and halogens
  • set a standing lamp in the interior that directs light both upward and downward
  • paint vertical stripes on one of the walls

Remember, however, that a single ceiling lamp or minimalist directional spotlights on rails are not enough to optimally illuminate the interior and will not guarantee that the light will fulfill its three basic functions. Therefore, be sure to read the rest of this article, in which we suggest, how to illuminate an interior deprived of main light. There you will find numerous universal tips that will also work in low-ceilinged rooms.

Low interior without ceiling lighting? It's not a problem!

No matter what kind of interior you are dealing with - high, low or without a central ceiling lamp, the light that should be in the room can be divided into three types:

  • light for general illumination of the space (this consists of various types of lamps, sconces, spots, etc.)
  • light that has a specific task to perform (most often it is a spot light, directed, used to work at a desk, illuminate a kitchen countertop, assist us in reading a book or applying makeup)
  • and light, the role of which is to accentuate specific points and elements of equipment and build the atmosphere in the interior

The fact that the room you are decorating does not have central lighting, is no reason why it should not be beautifully and well lit. After all, there are many alternative ways to bring light even into a low and unattractive looking space.

The most effective way to illuminate this type of interior, will be to introduce various types of wall and standing lamps - From wall lamps to floor lamps to table lamps. By properly arranging and mixing these light sources, you will get a sense of depth and cozy atmosphere in the interior, which will positively change its character.

The inclusion in the design of all these light sources after thinking about how the space is to serve us, will guarantee effective and efficient lighting of the room, even if it is low and there is no central lighting in it. After all, the secret to good interior lighting lies in its variety and layering, and you can safely achieve this with lamps other than pendant or ceiling lights.

Layered interior lighting - how to build it without overhead lighting?

In an interior without central overhead lighting, the role of lamps responsible for the light coming from above and illuminating as much space as possible, can successfully take over, appropriately selected and located wall lamps and standing floor lamps. What to keep in mind when planning to buy specific models?

Make sure that the wall lamps you choose, as well as floor lamps, guarantee strong light and distribute it well (avoid lampshades and lampshades that focus light and point directed light),

  • when choosing floor lamps, choose both those that illuminate the sofa or coffee table from above (a good solution here will certainly be a standing lamp with a long arm with a shade in the shape of an inverted bowl), as well as those that direct the light both upward and downward (for example, with a classic textile lampshade),
  • in a small space, the role of the overhead light will successfully take over the XXL floor lamp, while in a larger room it is worth placing floor lamps at an equal distance from each other - for example, in all corners of the room,
  • if you want to evenly illuminate the entire interior, illuminate it with equal sconces symmetrically distributed along the walls of the room. The number of available models, will certainly allow you to choose such wall lamps that will fit into the arrangement both with their style and color scheme, and, above all, will fulfill their main task, which is to illuminate the space (for our part, we especially recommend beautiful Cumulus wall lamps with as many as three elegant lampshades),
  • wall sconces will also allow you to create interesting decorative accents in the interior - a pair of identical wall sconces on both sides of the sofa or fireplace, will work anytime and anywhere, as well as a large, elegant wall sconce placed on the wall above the table or dresser.

Light for low interior work

Even if there is no central lighting in the interior, standing lamps - floor and table lamps can provide you with adequate lighting to perform certain activities.

First of all, consider where you will need focused, directional light. It is this kind of lighting - all kinds of wall lights or lamps with narrow shades that focus light, will work best as a task light.

  • If you want strong light for work, choose a desk lamp with a high-powered bulb.
  • If you like to read, place a floor lamp next to your chair or couch with a shade that focuses the light so that the stream falls on the text from behind, from behind your head. In the bedroom, on both sides of the bed, install wall sconces - preferably with movable shades or LED light on cantilevers (you are looking for a modern solution to help with reading? Check out the Puro wall lamp collection).
  • If you want to illuminate the table, choose a floor lamp or, if the table is against the wall, a wall lamp with several movable shades.

Table lamps in a low interior - they make the mood

Building mood in interiors with standing lamps and wall lamps is a pleasure! In an interior devoid of overhead lighting, where the role of interior lighting is mainly taken over by floor and wall lamps, it is largely on the table lamps, bears the burden of building a cozy atmosphere. Fortunately, these lamps, cope with this task brilliantly, and it is enough to introduce them into the interior to immediately become nicer, warmer, quieter...

Depending on what kind of atmosphere you want to create and the style of your interior, you can choose from numerous models with textile lampshade - including coziest in fluffy velour version, modern lamps with transparent glass shades or minimalist designer designs.

Remember that choosing a table lamp with a transparent shade or with a sphere-shaped shade, you will get more light than choosing a lamp with a fabric lampshade. It all depends on what kind of atmosphere you care most about and whether you have already managed to sufficiently illuminate the interior with wall sconces and standing lamps.
