Some say that "in the bedroom only sleep", and that the best light for sleep is... complete darkness, the role of bedroom lighting is often underestimated. However, let's try to approach the topic from a different angle. The bedroom is the room where you spend about half of your life. It is where you greet and say goodbye to each day, prepare for the next challenges and summarize what happened in an evening conversation with your partner or partner, It is where you rest, calm down, relax. It's also the place where you read and move to the world of fiction, dream, daydream and romance... So you'll probably agree that this interior plays quite an important role in our lives, and that's why it's worth considering what lamps will work best in your bedroom.
Types of bedroom lamps
Lamps with which you can illuminate the bedroom, we can divide into several main categories. They will be:
- ceiling or pendant lamps, acting as the main source of light in the bedroom,
- bedside lamps brightening the gloom
- reading lamps, if you like to immerse yourself in reading before bed,
- dressing table lighting, if it was found in your bedroom and
- floor lamps, having mainly a decorative function.
Faced with the choice of lighting for the bedroom, therefore, start by thinking about what activities you will perform in your bedroom, what space you have, how you want to arrange it and what lamps you want to invite to it. You already know? In that case, let's start by choosing a headlight.
Ceiling lamp or plafond - which bedroom lamp will work best as the main lighting for your bedroom?
The choice of master bedroom lighting depends largely on its size, height and furnishings. Standard pendant lamps will work practically only in very high bedrooms (from 3 m height). If you nevertheless want to opt for this type of lamp, hang it so that it is above the lower part of the bed or above another piece of furniture - an armchair, chaise longue or coffee table, rather than in the passageways.
If you do not have such a spacious bedroom, you can choose between a plafond and a ceiling lamp or a modern, small chandelier.
- Classic round plafond will certainly be the safest and most versatile solution, which will also work in low and small bedrooms. When choosing this type of lamp, pay attention that its fixture is closed from below, but not with a transparent glass (so that the bulb does not shine straight into your eyes when you rest lying on the bed). The material of the lower part of the plafond is also important, as is its color. Opt for milky glass, colors and materials that guarantee cozy light and perfect diffusion, and if you're looking for a plafond for the bedroom, check out the space collection of plafonds and pendant lamps, with fabric lampshades and a lower aperture made of special material that imitates parchment and gives the effect of "soft" light.
- Ceiling lamps and chandeliers differ from most pendant lamps in length and type of suspension. These lamps usually hang from racks that are much shorter than the standard cable or steel cable suspensions typical of pendant lamps. The same is true of modern lamps resembling in their form classic chandeliers. Their designs are often based on vertical or horizontal frames, which can be shortened if necessary (usually by informing the manufacturer at the ordering stage). If you're dreaming of a modern bedroom lamp, check out the horizontal and vertical spherical ones ceiling lamps from the Cumulus collection or extremely practical, while elegant Astra ceiling lamps, which will illuminate with their brightness even very low bedrooms.
Bedside lamps in the bedroom - singly or always in pairs?
A lamp that plays an equally important - if not even more important - role in the bedroom is the bedside lamp, or perhaps we should rather write - bedside lamps - because these usually come in doubles, proudly displayed on the nightstands on either side of the bed. And here comes the first question - do bedside lamps always have to "go hand in hand" - and both in terms of quantity and appearance? Is one lamp on one side of the bed enough?
There is no rigid rule that determines the the number of bedside lamps in the bedroom. If you have a small bed, or sleep in it alone(s), you do not necessarily need to buy two table lamps. Of course, bedside lamps of identical design, placed evenly on both sides of the (especially large) bed, bring symmetry and a sense of harmony to the interior, but if you do not need to achieve such an effect or simply do not have that much space, nothing prevents you from limiting the number of accessories to a single cabinet with a single lamp. On the other hand, it is important that the shade of the bedside lamp or bedside sconces cover the bulb, so that the bulb does not glare at your eyes.
If you don't have space for nightstands or you want a maximally minimalist arrangement, you can also choose to replacing bedside lamps with wall lamps mounted on both sides of the bed (in this case, symmetry matters). Choose ones with a movable boom so that you can direct the light beam at will.
Bedside lamps vs. reading lamps - what kind of lamp for a bedroom where booklovers sleep?
If you like to read before bed and the bedside lamp is also to act as a reading lamp, it is important that you have the ability to direct the light stream. Here, wall lamps with movable shades and extension arms or bedside lamps with steerable shade or lampshade will be perfect. Also, remember to make the bedside lamp slightly higher than your nightstand. It will provide you with comfortable illumination with a light source above eye level, and also ensures that the correct proportions are maintained.
A very important part of bedroom lighting design is also the ability to turn the lights off and on without getting out of bed. Keep this in mind at the electrical design stage, or make sure the bedside lamp switch is "within reach". There's nothing worse than having to get out of a warm bed to turn off the light by which you were just reading a novel that just... lulled you to sleep.
At what height the light switch by the bed?
The optimum mounting height for a bedside light switch should be approximately 50-60 cm off the floor. This location makes it convenient to turn the lamp on and off from a lying position, which is especially important in the bedroom. This allows the user to easily control the lighting without having to get out of bed, which promotes comfort and relaxation. However, it is worth remembering that when choosing the height at which to place the light switch at the bed, you should take into account the height of the bed, its position in the room, the height of the mattress or the type of lamp. If you forgot to plan a switch next to the bed, you can also choose to wall lamp with on/off switch, which will allow you comfort without drilling.
In the glare of the spotlight, or how to illuminate the dressing table in the bedroom?
If your bedroom included a dressing table, where you paint and get ready for work or an evening out, it is worth thinking about additional lighting for this place. Depending on how you have arranged the makeup corner, you can opt for two wall sconces on either side of the mirror, or install an elongated strip with several lampshades above the mirror. Our advice - You want to give your bedroom a splendor and unique character? On both sides of the bed hang hanging lamps with spherical shades. The lampshades should hang at a height of 30 to 55 cm above the bedside tables and be about 10-15 cm from the wall. Such a solution will allow you not only to create a designer atmosphere in the interior, but also to replace bedside lamps or reading lamps with striking pendant lamps. In a small bedroom, this type of lighting will also allow you to replace the central lighting.
